What is the Relax and Relamp Program?Relamp and Relax is a turnkey lighting lifecycle management program for growers, offering HPS sourcing, LED testing, and comprehensive recycling services.
-
How does HPS recycling work?We provide new lamps, facilitate repackaging and logistics, and issue impact reduction reports and certificates of recycling. Check out an article from the EPA on Establishing a Recycling Program for Mercury-Containing Light Bulbs Let us handle the logistics so you can focus on your operation and Relax!
-
Why is Recycling HPS lamps Important? Each HPS lamp contains mercury, which is toxic and harmful to the environment if not properly disposed of. You can read about the Minamata Convention on Mercury and the importance of closing the loop on this compound here In addition to environmental concerns, enforcement of environmental compliance is inevitable and it is best to stay out in front of the curve. California has signed Title 24 which will eventually outlaw HPS and push the conversion to LED. Let us help you clean up your act and work through the conversion to LED on your schedule!
-
How do I know when to replace my HPS or LED fixtures? We provide regular maintenance reminders and testing services to ensure optimal light performance. Did you know that less than a 10% reduction on your PAR meter can equal a 30% loss in yield under your HPS? We can help you know where you stand and the best way to get your yield up and recycle your exhausted lamps. Our LED Relamp and Relax program provides testing and reporting services to monitor fixture performance, identify degradation, and recommend timely replacements, ensuring optimal yields while offering recycling solutions for your old fixtures. We provide Impact Reduction Reports and Certificates of Recycling with every project!

What makes Sustainable Terrains unique? We’re a horticultural lighting agency with an unbiased, customer-first approach. Our solutions are designed to be sustainable, affordable, and tailored. Our personal experience with Horticultural Lighting exceeds ten years specializing on all forms of technology, specializing in LED product development, specification and application. While advocating for the eventual conversion to all LED, we understand the inherent value of HPS for its' unique ability to deliver heat to the canopy in colder climes as well as its' proven performance historically. We also understand that converting to LED is a non-linear process and requires more consideration than just a 1:1 swap. Let us lend our expertise and network to make sure you are getting exactly what you need for this critical input in your grow.
-
Can you help me plan a transition from HPS to LED?Yes, we recommend a hybrid LED:HPS “checkerboarding” strategy to help growers transition gradually while ensuring HVAC and dehumidification readiness. This method allows growers to find the cracks in their system while reaping the benefits of both HPS and LED (which has shown excellent results exceeding one or the other in certain applications). Any LED salesperson will tell you it is a simple as dropping lights and hanging new ones. We know the transition is much more nuanced and requires facility modification and cultural practices to make the most of the transition of the new tech and prevent crop loss in the process!
-
What types of lighting solutions do you offer? We provide a curated selection of HPS lamps, LED fixtures and testing services. Source HPS direct including premium options from Philips, Ushio, and more. We can meet your budget and production goals as well as handle the recycling of old lamps. Our Relamp and Relax HPS program includes the cost of logistics, recycling and reporting in the cost of the lamps! We have long standing relationships with multiple, reliable LED vendors to meet any need: Fast, Affordable or Durable. If you think your LEDs are falling short of their marketed performance, reach out to us to confirm or deny that your lighting is the issue. We work with DLC approved third party labs to let you know what condition your LEDs are in and if you need to replace them now or in a few years!
-
What is the environmental impact of switching to LED?Switching to LED can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% while maintaining or improving yields. One of our favorite metaphors is that HPS is like an automatic transmission and LED is like a 5-speed with a clutch. You may have more control or more fun with a manual transmission but it takes time to learn how to make the most of de-coupling your heat and light inputs. Of course, when you switch to LED, it is most responsible to recycle your old lamps and fixtures. If you source LED through us, we will take care of the old gear for you!
-
Do you assist with ESG reporting?Yes, we provide sustainability metrics and reports to simplify corporate ESG(Environmental and Social Governance) compliance. From Impact Reduction to Certificates of recycling, we can help you with your sustainability compliance. And if you are new to this area, we have a dedicated team of experts to help you understand and get your Corporate Sustainability Reporting (CSR) pointed in the right direction. Reach out today if you have questions about how to improve your performance and reduce your impact!

What should I consider when sourcing LED fixtures?Sourcing the right LED fixtures is critical for maximizing yield, energy efficiency, and long-term reliability. Here are the key factors to consider: Component Quality: Look for fixtures built with premium components like Samsung LM301B diodes or Osram 660nm chips, which ensure durability and consistent performance. Avoid cheaper alternatives from unverified manufacturers, as they often compromise on quality. Spectrum Design: Ensure the spectrum is tailored to your crop's needs. For cannabis or other high-DLI crops, balanced red-to-blue ratios with supplemental far-red or UV can enhance resin production and genetic expression. Build Quality and Design: Consider the physical design—fixtures with smooth, cleanable heat sinks and proper glass or optic protection reduce maintenance headaches and extend the fixture’s lifespan. Look for IP-rated fixtures that can withstand humid environments. Dimming and Control Features: Modern LEDs should integrate seamlessly with building management systems or offer dimming capabilities (0-10V or similar) to optimize light intensity and power consumption. Warranty and Manufacturer Support: Always verify the warranty terms and the manufacturer’s track record. A strong warranty is meaningless if the company lacks reliable customer service or ceases operations. Degradation Rates: LEDs are often marketed with exaggerated longevity claims. Many fixtures show significant degradation (up to 40-50%) within a few years, even when marketed for 90% maintenance at 100,000 hours. Regular testing and monitoring are crucial to ensure consistent output. Rebates and Energy Efficiency: Check for compatibility with local energy rebate programs or incentives. DLC-certified fixtures often qualify for rebates, making them a more cost-effective choice. Sourcing and Vendor Verification: Work with trusted vendors who provide transparency about manufacturing and sourcing. Our team can assist in verifying vendor claims and ensure you’re investing in reliable fixtures that align with your goals. At Sustainable Terrains, we believe in empowering growers with data-driven insights and unbiased recommendations to help you make the best decision for your facility’s unique needs. Avoid "cheap photons" that sacrifice quality and degrade prematurely —invest in fixtures that deliver consistent results and support long-term success. What is Controlled Environment Agriculture(CEA)?Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) is a method of growing plants in precisely managed indoor or greenhouse environments. It’s all about dialing in the perfect balance of light, temperature, humidity, and airflow to create ideal conditions for plant growth, no matter the weather or season outside. CEA isn’t just about growing—it’s about control. By using advanced technologies like LED lighting, climate systems, and hydroponics, growers can optimize yields, enhance quality, and conserve resources. Think of it as farming meets engineering, with data and science guiding the way. From tissue culture to leafy greens to high-value crops like cannabis, CEA is reshaping agriculture by providing consistency, sustainability, and scalability. It’s not just farming; it’s a solution to modern agricultural challenges in a resource-strained world.
